Jeremiah 18:15: But my people have forgotten me; they make offerings to false gods; they made them stumble in their ways, in the ancient roads, and to walk into side roads, and not the highway.
Jeremiah 31:33: For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Bruce Jenner “came out” on Vogue’s magazine cover as Caitlyn Jenner. In a few days after that, Facebook was lit up on fire with a number of individuals claiming that they no longer wanted to identify as what they were. A clearly white woman stubbornly insisted that she identified as black. Furthermore, World magazine but a few issues ago, on March 21, 2015, in the issue “For the Sake of the Children”, published Andree Seu Peterson’s column entitled “Acronym Absurdity” (a very worthy piece) the problems with the ever-increasing LGBT movement which must continue to swell to accommodate new additions to their ranks.
Andree Seu Peterson echoes in this article a sentiment already raised in her online article “B is for Bogus” published earlier – that the bi-sexual element of the LGBT movement is the poser who undermines the potentially legitimate suffering of the rest of the movement. The rest of the movement are individuals supposedly struggling to escape the imprisonment of cultural expectations which they are biologically wired to reject or to escape their own bodies by means of expensive and painful surgeries. But the bi-sexuals, are clearly just individuals who are interested in free, unrestricted and unlimited and unfaithful sexual relations. They have chosen to identify as whatever they like.
The reason I entitled this short thought “mistaken identity” is because we, as an American culture, are actually undermining our own agenda with all these pursuits. The agenda supposedly was that we were to allow anyone to be anything they wanted to be, so long as it “didn’t hurt anyone else”. But that agenda, very quickly, removes identity altogether, instead of creating new and freer identities. What if the representative from Colorado, in the United States House of Representatives, stands up and declares that he wishes to be identified as the representative from California? How far are we willing to go to allow individuals to establish their own identity and to change it when it pleases them? Some who read this post may scoff at the notion. “Don’t be silly” they’ll say, “We’re not talking about chaos, merely personal and sexual freedoms!” But what really is the difference between saying, “despite the fact that biologically I am a man, yet I believe myself to actually be a woman and consequently should be able to live as a cultural female”, and saying “despite the fact that I have been elected by the voters of Colorado to represent their interests, I think that I should be allowed to speak as if I were elected by the voters of California to represent their interests”. I am sure that anyone who wishes to nit-pic can find differences in the agendas, but I believe the principle is the same. We want to be so free to self-identify that we obliterate all boundaries and differences. Instead of “diversity”, what you will have when this is all said and done, is a monochrome society of fickle people, who have lost their spiritual compass and only know how to obey their own desires which are constantly manipulated by consumeristic forces so that others can gain power and wealth through our own foolishness.
We continue to persist in believing, in America, that the soul of man is evolving, and that he is becoming better, wiser, freer, etc. We continue to persist in believing that man is not fallen. That man’s heart is not, as Jeremiah 17:9 says, deceitful above all things, and desperately sick. What God said to the people of Israel through the prophet Jeremiah is true today: when we forget the true compass of the universe – the moral universe, the spiritual universe, the material universe, everything – we stumble in our ways, we stagger off the ancient roads onto side roads, and, as Christian in Pilgrim’s Progress repeatedly discovered, and as hundreds of Arabian shepherds have always known, not all paths lead places that you want to go.
The truth is that our culture is drunk on the freedom of self-determination. We believe not only that we should be able to determine our temporal and eternal destiny, but that we can determine our temporal and eternal destiny. We have merely become a pawn of the hand of Satan. He deceives us. How does he deceive us? By leading us to pursue the whirlwind of our own desires, by leading us down winding side-roads that lead only to our own destruction. The initial thrill of “being a woman” may satisfy Caitlyn for a time, in the way that switching who you’re dating in high school results in a brief period of guiltless ecstasy. But ultimately, being a man, being a woman, or being something in between cannot satisfy our souls. We were not made to be men, or women, so much, as we were made to be worshippers of God. Our manhood and womanhood was created to serve that ultimate interest in the first place. If we lose sight of the purpose of man, to glorify God and enjoy Him forever, then nothing else, no matter how ‘free’ will satisfy.
We are not free. And the more of God’s boundaries we throw down, the more we open ourselves to be enslaved by ourselves. You can only serve one master at a time, and if you are not serving God, then you are serving yourself – and you are your own worst master, because, apart from God, you do not know yourself. We should instead learn from the apostle Paul who learned:
Gal. 2:20: I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
